Base building
Every faction builds a base, and the system is very close to the first Dawn of War: constructing buildings, researching and upgrading them unlocks new units, and the strongest units need more power and influence on the battlefield before you can field them. Each faction also has fortifications, such as the Space Marines' Hammerfall Bunker.

Taking territory
Battles are built around capturing and holding ground. The developer describes the core of the game as territorial capture and command, strategic squad management and base building, the formula of the 2004 original.

Squads, wargear and veterancy
You command squads, not single soldiers, and many of them can swap weapons mid-match: an Intercessor squad can trade its Bolt Rifles for Auto or Stalker Bolt Rifles, or add a grenade launcher. Units gain veterancy, which improves their stats or unlocks new abilities, depending on the faction.

Cover, retreat and reinforcement
Cover cuts the damage your troops take from ranged fire, either from one direction or all round in buildings you can garrison; flamers and grenades ignore it, and melee pulls units out. Retreat pulls a squad back to your nearest production building while it takes less damage. On-field reinforcement refills a squad where it stands, which the developer calls the most powerful of the three, at a steep resource cost.

Commanders and Stratagems
Each faction has its own Commanders: ten in all at launch. In multiplayer and Skirmish you pick one before the match and usually build it mid-match from your headquarters; match settings can make it a starting unit or turn Commanders off. Every faction also has a powerful Stratagem, an ability that can wreck a big group of enemies if timed well.

The Combat Director
The famous Dawn of War sync kills are back and bigger: instead of only the final blow, every fight between units plays out as matched animation, picked by a system that looks at who is fighting whom. The developer says it adds up to millions of possible animation combinations.

Destruction
Buildings collapse once damaged enough, and scenery such as structures and vehicle wrecks can be knocked into rubble by stray fire, so maps change as a battle goes on.
