Dawn of War 4 Crusade Mode: The Endless Campaign Explained
Crusade mode is Dawn of War 4's endless campaign: a turn-based map of Kronus where you spend Action Points to move your Strike Force, then fight the hard battles in real time with units that keep their experience and wargear. It arrives as the first free update of Year One, and a typical Crusade takes eight to ten hours.

How a Crusade turn works
A Crusade starts on a world map of Kronus, the planet of the main campaign, cut into territories. On your turn you get a limited number of Action Points and use them to move your Strike Force, the army you take from fight to fight, into neutral and enemy territories. Every territory has its own rewards and its own risks, so the planning phase is about getting the most out of each move before the enemy answers with theirs.
The developer's own example: attacking a territory costs two Action Points, but a territory can pay two Action Points back if you win the fight there. Win it, and you have pushed further across the map and kept your turn going at the same time.
Which battles you fight yourself
The game compares the strength of your Strike Force with the target. If you are so much stronger that the result is not in doubt, the fight plays out on its own, which keeps a long Crusade moving. The close fights are played the normal way, as real-time Dawn of War Skirmish battles. Rewards follow how well you did: beat an enemy that was favoured to win and you earn more.
Your Strike Force and Requisition
Unlike a single Skirmish match, a Crusade remembers your army. Units earn experience and level up as they fight, and they keep every skill and piece of wargear for the rest of the Crusade. Conquered regions give you Requisition, which you spend on two things: making your territories stronger, through better defences and economy so the enemy struggles to take them back, and healing and upgrading your Strike Force between battles.
A Crusade for each Commander
Crusades are built around Commanders. Each one has their own goal, starting position and strengths and weaknesses in combat, so two Crusades do not play the same way. Five Commanders have their own Crusade in the developer's plan, and more Crusades come free after that. Two of the free Year One updates add new Crusade and Last Stand scenarios for one Commander each:
- Lord Ahmnok (Map Pack II): New Last Stand and Crusade scenarios for the Necron Commander Ahmnok. Second, before spring 2027.
- Guzcutta (Map Pack IV): New Last Stand and Crusade scenarios for the Ork Commander Guzcutta. Fourth, toward summer 2027.
Who those Commanders are and how they fight is on our Dawn of War 4 Commanders page. The whole order of free updates and paid DLCs is on the Dawn of War 4 roadmap.

Questions
Is Crusade mode in Dawn of War 4 at launch?
Not on day one. The developer's newest posts list Crusade Mode as a free update in Year One: the first one on the roadmap, with Map Pack I, at the start of the 2027 timeline. A May 2026 post, written when launch was still set for September 17, had placed five Commander Crusades at launch; after the move to December 3, 2026, the roadmap puts Crusade after launch.
Is Dawn of War 4 Crusade mode free?
Yes. Crusade Mode comes to every owner as a free update, Standard and Commander Edition alike, and the new Crusade scenarios for Lord Ahmnok and Guzcutta are free too.
How does Crusade work in Dawn of War 4?
You conquer Kronus on a turn-based world map. Each turn you spend Action Points to move your Strike Force into neutral and enemy territories; attacking one costs two. Fights you are far stronger in resolve on their own, the close ones you fight as a normal real-time battle, and your units keep their experience, skills and wargear for the whole Crusade.
How long is a Crusade in Dawn of War 4?
About eight to ten hours for a typical Crusade, by the developer’s own estimate. Every run plays out differently, so the same Crusade gives you a different war the next time.
Is Dawn of War 4 Crusade like Dark Crusade?
It comes from the same idea. Crusade mode began in Dark Crusade, the expansion to the first Dawn of War, which had a map-based conquest campaign. In Dawn of War IV the map is turn-based with Action Points, each Commander has their own Crusade with its own goals, and the battles themselves are real-time Skirmish fights.
